A Qualitative Article on Autism

Introduction

The article by Cloete & Obaigwa (2019) focuses on the challenges experienced by caregivers taking care of children with autism. The study, therefore, sought to explore the emotional, financial and social challenges that autism disorder places on the caregiver, especially in countries without adequate support services for disorders like autism spectrum disorder. The purpose of this assignment is to provide a critique of the selected qualitative research article.

The type of qualitative method of the study is a descriptive phenomenological method where focus group discussions (FGDs) were used to collect the data. A descriptive phenomenological technique is utilized in exploring and providing a description of the experiences of the study participants (Sundler et al., 2019).

The target sample was selected using purposeful sampling. During the purposive sample, the selection of the study participants is performed according to the objectives of the study and the characteristics of the population (Palinkas et al., 2015). In this study, the target sample included caregivers of children with autism and was going occupational therapy at Kenyatta Hospital.

Focus group discussion (FGDs) were utilized in data collection. Through FGDs, the study participants shared their experiences and concerns freely. This enabled in-depth of the insights and perspectives of the study participants (Nyumba et al., 2018). Data analysis was done through inductive content analysis. Thematic analysis was used to classify the findings according to their themes.

Before performing the study, ethical approval was sought from Health Research Ethics Committees from the University of Stellenbosch and the University of Nairobi. Throughout the study, research ethics were followed. More importantly, informed consent was sought from all study participants before they were enrolled in the study. Moreover, the privacy and confidentiality of participants were maintained by using pseudonyms to maintain the anonymity of the participants. The data was kept in a safe place where only authorized individuals were able to access it. A Qualitative Article on Autism Essay Paper

According to the findings of the study by Cloete & Obaigwa (2019), caregivers of children with autism experience a significant emotional burden. First, accepting the diagnosis is difficult. Additionally, children with autism have numerous needs when compared to other children within the same age group. Moreover, sometimes families with children with autism face stigmatization since some community members lack awareness about this developmental condition. There were also cases of families facing domestic problems after the diagnosis.  Accordingly, there is a need to educate communities about developmental disorders such as autism and provide the required social support for the families.

One of the limitations of this study is that the small sample size was used. Therefore, this may reduce the reliability of the study findings and thus limit the generalization of the findings. A study with a larger sample size can provide a better representation of the general population.

Summary

Caregivers of children with autism undergo numerous challenges. Therefore, caregivers need the necessary support to meet the various needs of children with autism. For example, there is a need to educate caregivers about how to handle children with autism and at the same time create awareness about developmental disorders like autism in communities. More importantly, it is important to adopt a multi-disciplinary collaboration approach to ensure that needs of both the children with autism and their caregivers are addressed holistically.
