As a nurse practicing in California State, being a member of the Association of California Nurse Leaders (ACNL), and American Organization for Nurse Leadership (AONL) would be beneficial for my role as a nurse leader. In fact, membership in these two organizations offers nine significant benefits. Firstly, get time off the busy work schedule while engaging with a professional body of nurse leaders and like-minded professionals who have similar experiences. Secondly, get opportunities for continuing education with updates on issues that affect the profession. Thirdly, career resources that help members to access job prospects. Fourthly, mentorship programs that focuses on learning about the industry from someone who has experience in the industry. Fifthly, networking opportunities through the organization events (such as conferences) that bring members together to expand networks. Sixthly, access to resources, particularly publications that offer useful information about the profession and industry, and news about upcoming meetings, conferences and events that may not have been publicized. Seventhly, exposure to different viewpoints that allow for a new outlook and new ideas. Eighthly, professional development opportunities in the form of member-only materials, classes and workshops. Finally, increasing visibility as a professional by enhancing the professional brand (Vana & Tazbir, 2021).
Do you feel there are any disadvantages to membership? Explain your reasons for both.
Although being a member of the identified organizations offers benefits, they also present some disadvantages. Firstly, being a member of the organizations is costly with fees being demanded on a regular basis. Accessing the opportunities in the organization requires that some fee be paid, such as fee to attend classes and conferences. Also, there are hidden expenses such as gas, transportation and accommodation costs to attend meetings. Secondly, membership in the organizations takes much time, especially when they call for meetings and commitments. Time has value and any commitment to the organization would take time from other professional activities. Finally, they present pressure to act, such as reminders to attend a meeting or the association taking a position on an issue so that members are assumed to adopt the same position. Sometimes the organizations forget that diversity exists among the members with a variety of personal values, religious beliefs and political alignments (Vana & Tazbir, 2021).
