Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

The client was a 13-year-old, Caucasian male. According to the DSM-5, the adolescent manifested symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), predominantly inattention. The adolescent had problems holding attention during our conversation and did not seem to listen when spoken to. It appeared like his mind was wondering even during the MSE. He could also get easily distracted and reported being forgetful. My conversation with the client revealed that he had problems finishing his classwork and he would often lose things such as books, keys, money, and even his mobile phones. The client exhibited more than six symptoms of inattention and thus his symptoms fit the diagnostic criteria of ADHD, predominantly inattention (Keilow et al., 2018).

Behavioral therapy, a therapy focusing on behavior modification would be the treatment choice for this client. Behavior therapy entails reinforcement of the desirable behaviors by rewarding and praising good behaviors and setting limits and consequences for the problematic behaviors. The parents and teachers of the client will also be educated about behavioral therapy (Karbasi et al., 2018). Social skills training would also be beneficial for this client. Social skills training can be provided in a group setting where the appropriate behaviors are demonstrated and then the group members are instructed to practice these social skills (Karbasi et al., 2018).

Ritalin (methylphenidate) is the recommended medication for this client. Ritalin is a stimulant and stimulants are the first-line treatment options for ADHD. Ritalin works on transporters of both norepinephrine and dopamine and thus increasing their level in the brain; this improves the ADHD symptoms (Briars & Todd, 2016).
