Comparing Organizations with Benchmark Data
Introduction
Benchmarking refers to the comparing and assessment of services of a healthcare organization against similar national healthcare organizations. The main use of benchmarking is to maintain quality, improve patient satisfaction, improve patient safety, and ensure continuous improvement. This paper will present a benchmarking analysis for Glendale Memorial Hospital and El Camino Hospital.
Selected Organizations
The selected organizations include Glendale Memorial Hospital and El Camino Hospital. Glendale Memorial Hospital is located in California, Los Angeles County. The hospital is a 334-bed acute care hospital that provides primary healthcare services such as obstetrics, heart, cancer, emergency care, diagnostic imaging, as well as colorectal disease services. El Camino Hospital is a 420bed acute care hospital that provides similar care services provided by Glendale Memorial Hospital. The reason why these organizations were selected is that both hospitals are national-rated healthcare organizations that provide similar healthcare services. Therefore, it is important to compare and examine the services of these two organizations with national data. In addition, these two organizations are competitors and thus it is essential to compare their performance to ensure continuous improvement of the two organizations.
Comparison of the Organizations
For patient survey results, Glendale Memorial Hospital’s star rating for patient care is 4; communication between healthcare providers and patients 4; specific care issues 3; while the global measure overall care rating is 4. On the other hand, for El Camino Hospital, star rating for patient care is 3; communication between healthcare providers and patients 4; specific care issues 3; while the global measure overall care rating is 3.
For timely and effective care, the national average time patients spend on the Emergency Department (ED) before admission is 257, state 225. For Glendale Memorial Hospital, the average time patients spend on ED prior to admission is 302 while in El Camino Hospital it is 314. For Readmissions, Complications, and Deaths, the national death rate for heart patients is 13.2%, the rate of bloodstream infection following surgical procedure 5.23 while the national death rate for COPD patients is 8.93. For Glendale Memorial Hospital, the death rate for heart patients is 8.2%, rate of bloodstream infection following surgical procedure 3.6 while the death rate for COPD patients is 4.5. For El Camino Hospital, the death rate for heart patients is 9.8%, the rate of bloodstream infection following surgical procedure 6.4 while the death rate for COPD patients is 6.3. For the use of medical imaging, the national score is 23.6% while Glendale Memorial Hospital’s score is 19.4% and El Camino Hospital’s score for 21.2%. Differences in Performance Measures
Differences in performance measures indicate the difference in the quality of care provided in the two healthcare organizations, and their performance when compared to the national benchmark data (Finney et al, 2017). Zhang et al (2018) also explain that the differences in performance measures indicate the level of the organizational efficiency.
Impact of Differences in Performance Measures on Nursing Practice
The differences in performance indicators providers nursing professionals with an opportunity to improve, and also allows patients to identify the higher and lower-performing healthcare organizations (Zhang et al, 2018). According to Finney et al (2017), performance measures indicate care processes that directly improve care as well as markers of components of healthcare quality. Therefore, differences in performance measures indicate essential information regarding care and point out to healthcare practitioners the aspects of care that need improvement in terms of healthcare outcomes and performance (Zhang et al, 2018).
