Course Expectations and Nurse Practitioner (NP) Competencies

My expectations for this advanced practice nursing course for Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) across the lifespan are that I will excel and enjoy my practice to the highest level of a doctorate. This is considering the fact that I have already 11 years of experience working as a registered nurse in the ER. I also expect satisfaction in practice because my state which is Iowa is luckily a full practice authority state (AANP, 2022). Based on the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) core competencies (DeCapua, 2019), my strengths include having competencies in technology use, ethics (Haswell, 2019), use of evidence-based practice or scientific foundations, and independent practice competencies. My only weakness is that I have never worked as a provider even though I have many years of practice as a nurse. This means the challenge I foresee will be adjusting to my new role as an autonomous practitioner in a full practice state with no supervision. My career objectives for this course include that I intend to study and train to the highest level of my career. This means that I will enrol myself for my doctorate after getting my masters degree as an advanced practice nurse. The other objective is to practice in a rural setting where there are disadvantaged undeserved minority populations. There is a dire need of primary care providers at the grassroots level and this will be my way of giving back to the society. Because I like working with families, this FNP course will also help me achieve the career objective of working with minority families (particularly African Americans and Hispanics) that usually have a special set of social determinants of health or SDOH. This discussion post is based on the expectations of the course Advanced Practice Care of Adults Across the Lifespan. I am an ER nurse with 11 years of experience treating patients of all ages with various health conditions. However, this will be my first time in the role as a provider. I am currently in Iowa which is an independent practice state for nurse practitioners. I expect by the end of this course I will be more confident in treating adult patients in the primary care setting.
