The “Nursing Education Practicum Documentation (NEPD) Forms” provide weekly, competency-based documentation of clinical practicum activities and are utilized by learners to communicate practicum experiences to course faculty. Be sure to read the instructions on the form for information on how to complete the assignment before you begin.

In Topic 1, you completed the “Overall Practicum Goals (Week 1)” section of the “Nursing Education Practicum Documentation (NEPD) Goals Form” by writing the overall goals (S.M.A.R.T goals or objectives) for your practicum. In this topic, you will re-address these goals by completing the second part of the form, “Evaluation of Overall Practicum Goals (Week 16),” during Topic 16 to evaluate if these goals have been met. Evaluation of Overall Practicum Goals (Week 16)
Review the goals you wrote in Week 1 and write a reflection for each one of them. Include whether or not you met your goals and provide some detail about the process.

 

1. The first goal was to build a healthy learning relationship with students and fellow instructors. Although the relationship with students was not achieved by the expected time frame of three weeks, the interaction with fellow instructors was achieved. The continued understanding and communication in class sessions helped achieve the intended goal later.

 

2. During the patient assessment, it was evident that the students had achieved listening skills. The justification was in their ability to obtain detailed patient information (Lowton, 2021). Within the expected time of two weeks, some students were better than others in listening to patients. The reason is the difference in everyone’s ability and duration of learning and understanding.

 

3. The most critical task for nurses is to make the right decisions with the information they have (Lowton, 2021). The third goal of making ethical judgments, measured by their decisions every day, was achieved within the expected time of four weeks. It would be a disaster to release nurses who cannot make ethical judgments under pressure.

 

4. Every day, nurses face different people with different issues. Time management skills help prioritize issues to help all patients within the critical time (McCullagh, et al, 2020). Teaching students time management skills was achieved. It was evidenced by effective care for patients. The only issue was in the ability to manage their personal time efficiently.

5. The right to personal decisions cannot be abused. Nurses have no right to manipulate patients (McCullagh, et al, 2020). The fifth goal is to educate nurses on the legal aspects. By the sixteenth week, the expectation was that they would be informed on these aspects. The goal was achieved. The nurses learned to respect patients’ decisions, as evidenced by their implementation of the patient’s requirements.

Overall Practicum Goals: Use the S.M.A.R.T. goal format to create goals you have for your overall practicum experience. Be sure your goals are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time bound (S.M.A.R.T. goals). Type your five practicum goals in the space below. Consider what you want to accomplish during this practicum course. You may choose to focus in on a specific aspect of nursing education or a variety of nursing education experiences within your selected practicum setting and population. Goal #1

S=To form a rapport my students and other nurse instructors            M=Success will be measured by assessing the quality of interaction I have with my students and other nurse instructors, and my ability to address each student by their name.                                                                                                 A=I can achieve this goal in the process of learning and practice.                  R=Communication skills are important for a nurse. Effective communication allows the passing of information between colleagues and students, which is central in providing working and creating relationships that will allow collaboration during learning.

T= I hope to achieve this by week three

Goal #2

S=To help the students obtain listening skills.

M=Success will be measured by evaluating the ability students to obtain a

detailed patient history during the patient assessment.

A=I can achieve this goal during the practice sessions.

R=Listening skills are central to patient care. They enable one to attain a comprehensive history from the patient while picking out the most important aspects that influence the course of presenting illness and treatment.

T= I hope to achieve this by week two

Goal 3

S=To teach the students skills of ethical judgment.

M=This will be assessed by constantly evaluating the clinical decisions students make during patient care to ensure that they are morally sound.

A=I can achieve this in the course of the practicum

R=Nursing ethics are the principles guiding the decision-making processes involved during patient are. They ensure that nurses make moral decision for the patient benefit.

T= I hope to to achieve this by week four

Goal #4

S=To help students develop effective time management skills.

M=The success will be measured by assessing the time taken by students to effectively care for a patient and noting improvements.

A=I can attain this in the course of the practicum

R=Time management allows one to effective managed their specific roles through organizing and prioritizing the patient needs, café, personal obligations, and educational responsibilities. It also limits burnout and increase productivity.

T= This will be achieved by week 10

Goal #5

S=To teach students the legal aspects of patient care such as getting consent and respecting patient autonomy.

M=Success will  be measured by assessing the active patient involvement and implementation of their opinions as students conduct their practical.

A=I can attain this in the course of the practicum.

R=Patients have a right to decide on the course of their treatments without influence by the healthcare. Nurses have a duty to respect the patient wishes. It is the patients’ legal right to decide whether to accept or refuse treatment. Additionally, nurse are obligated to explain any procedures in detail, including the advantages and disadvantages. It is also paramount to obtain informed consent from a patient before performing any medical procedures.
