Identifying Research Methodologies Essay Example

Clinical inquiry is the practice of asking questions about clinical practice. To continuously improve patient care, all nurses should consistently use clinical inquiry to question why they are doing something the way they are doing it. Do they know why it is done this way, or is it just because we have always done it this way? Is it a common practice or a best practice?

In this Assignment, you will identify clinical areas of interest and inquiry and practice searching for research in support of maintaining or changing these practices. You will also analyze this research to compare research methodologies employed.  Identifying Research Methodologies Essay Example Essay Example

To Prepare:

Review the Resources and identify a clinical issue of interest that can form the basis of a clinical inquiry. Keep in mind that the clinical issue you identify for your research will stay the same for the entire course.
Based on the clinical issue of interest and using keywords related to the clinical issue of interest, search at least four different databases in the Walden Library to identify at least four relevant peer-reviewed articles related to your clinical issue of interest. You should not be using systematic reviews for this assignment, select original research articles.
Review the results of your peer-reviewed research and reflect on the process of using an unfiltered database to search for peer-reviewed research.
Reflect on the types of research methodologies contained in the four relevant peer-reviewed articles you selected.
Part 1: Identifying Research Methodologies

After reading each of the four peer-reviewed articles you selected, use the Matrix Worksheet template to analyze the methodologies applied in each of the four peer-reviewed articles. Your analysis should include the following:

The full citation of each peer-reviewed article in APA format.
A brief (1-paragraph) statement explaining why you chose this peer-reviewed article and/or how it relates to your clinical issue of interest, including a brief explanation of the ethics of research related to your clinical issue of interest.
A brief (1-2 paragraph) description of the aims of the research of each peer-reviewed article.
A brief (1-2 paragraph) description of the research methodology used. Be sure to identify if the methodology used was qualitative, quantitative, or a mixed-methods approach. Be specific.
A brief (1- to 2-paragraph) description of the strengths of each of the research methodologies used, including reliability and validity of how the methodology was applied in each of the peer-reviewed articles you selected.  Identifying Research Methodologies Essay Example

Evidence-Based Practice Part 1: Identifying Research Methodologies

The PICOT statement: Among immobile elderly patients in a skilled nursing facility(P), will two-hourly frequent repositioning of patients and air mattress (I) decrease the development of pressure injuries (O) compared with the use of air mattress without two hourly frequent repositioning over a three months period (T).

Why you chose this article and/or how it relates to the clinical issue of interest (include a brief explanation of the ethics of research related to your clinical issue of interest) I chose this study because it relates to the picot question. It is about the knowledge and awareness of nurses about pressure ulcer risk identification and prevention. The ethics involved relate to nonmaleficence or doing no harm to the patient. I chose this study because it focuses on and investigates the attitudes of nurses relating to pressure ulcers. It also looks at barriers to pressure ulcer prevention. The ethics remain nonmaleficence but also beneficence. I chose this article because it talks about the prevention of pressure ulcers. It addresses the PICOT question in that it will inform the rationale for turning the patients frequently. The ethics are beneficence and nonmaleficence. I chose this article because it addresses the issue of surfaces that can be used to prevent pressure ulcers. The surface determines the frequency of turning the patient and this is how the article is related to my PICOT question. The ethics of research related to the clinical issue is beneficence.
Brief description of the aims of the research of each peer-reviewed article To find out the level of knowledge of nurses about the quality issue of pressure injuries. To determine the attitudes of nurses on pressure ulcers and also the perceived barriers to prevention. The aim of this article is to inform and educate nurses on the prevention of pressure ulcers. The aim of the study is to determine the best surfaces that can be used on patients at risk of pressure ulcers to prevent the same.
Brief description of the research methodology used Be sure to identify if the methodology used was qualitative, quantitative, or a mixed-methods approach. Be specific. A quantitative study with experimental design.

This is a cross-sectional study that is quantitative in nature. This is an expert opinion that is a bit lower in the hierarchy of evidence. The methodology can be said to be a mixed-method approach. This was a randomized controlled trial which by nature is quantitative.
A brief description of the strengths of each of the research methodologies used, including reliability and validity of how the methodology was applied in each of the peer-reviewed articles you selected. The strength of this study is that it is experimental and hence can establish causality. It is also primary research. being experimental makes the results valid and reliability is also high following the process of inferential data analysis.

The strength is that it is primary research and also quantitative enabling inferences to be made. The validity is high because of the sizeable sample size (n=222). With this validity and the quantitative nature of the study, reliability of generalizability is also assured. The strength of the article is that it is based on facts taken from other studies and synthesized for better understanding. Since it is not exactly field research, we cannot really talk of validity and reliability. The strength is that this is a primary research effort generating new knowledge. Validity is high being a randomized trial involving random sampling. Because of the high validity, generalizability is also high as RCTs are experimental and definitive.
General Notes/Comments This study is crucial to the addition of knowledge about evidence-based practice or EBP The study adds to the body of EBP knowledge available. The article adds to awareness among nurses of the ways that pressure ulcers can be prevented. The study is instrumental in establishing causality with regard to pressure ulcers.
