Leadership Styles and Nursing

Nursing is both a political act as well as a practice profession. Nursing leadership is about critical thinking, activism, and action. It occurs in all nursing areas and roles. Nursing leadership is essential for the nurses’ immediate lives and also for the health sector at large. Therefore, the constant availability of vibrant and innovative leaders is needed in the health sector. Leadership in nursing affects the quality of patient care and the morale and productivity of employees. It requires bold, trustworthy, and recognizable nurses who can empower, assist and motivate others. They should also be innovative, professional, and authoritative (Herd et al., 2016). This paper seeks to delve into the leadership styles, traits, and practices, useful communication in leadership, and servant leadership in nursing practice.

Leadership Styles, Traits, and Practices

There are numerous leadership styles, including bureaucratic, transformational, laissez-faire, autocratic, and democratic leadership. All these leadership styles involve the use of good leadership traits, such as excellent communication skills, having ambition, being positive about motivating others, and having the capability to make fast and correct decisions. Leaders have some standard practices that they exercise in their various roles. First, they inspire a mutual goal to bring its success. They also participate in encouraging others to take action because their responsibility revolves around providing motivation and promoting collaboration. Additionally, nursing leaders seek to confront the problems they face in their journey to accomplish their objectives.

Yahaya & Ebrahim (2016), assert that nursing leaders ought to be conscious of their leadership styles as it enables them to recognize their strengths and weaknesses in the personal assessment. Consequently, it drives appropriate planning and areas to put more concentration.

Effective Communication in Leadership

Nursing leaders use communication to interact, negotiate, and exchange information with other leaders, their juniors, and with various fields. Thus, the secret to being a good leader is using effective communication. Good communication skills enable a leader to understand themselves since self-consciousness facilitates inner monologue, and creates confidence, communication also necessitates being specific, precise, and straightforward because it gives people the confidence to be consistent, and also builds trust. Moreover, a leader should give consideration to nonverbal communication and talk less and listen more.

Communication plays a significant role in patient care, mainly because it requires a variety of approaches. Effective communication has demonstrated to improve quality of patient care and better treatment for patients (Foronda, MacWilliams & McArthur, 2016).

Servant leadership in nursing practice

Servant leadership involves a leadership commitment to serve others aside from the usual practice of only guaranteeing an organization’s flourishing. According to Sipe & Frick (2015), a servant leader should have character traits such as empathy where they are compassionate about understanding the feelings of the people and responding appropriately. They also possess excellent listening skills and willingness to solve any future problems their members face. Servant leaders are a real steward, as they may come very close to offering direction and foresight to observe and monitor the organizational operations.

Servant leaders can embolden others and lead by being a role model and showing the way for others. The fact that they put work first is inspirational. Because of their dedication, servant leaders get their projects done on time. They are also excellent at promoting cooperation and teamwork.  Leadership Styles and Nursing Essay
