6053 Discussion 1: Leadership Theories in Practice

Post two key insights you had from the scholarly resources you selected.

Three journal articles that offered insight into leadership theories in nursing practice were reviewed. Two insights were gleaned from the articles. Firstly, leadership is structured such that there is a leader at the top who offers direction to the followers. In offering direction, the leader determines what the followers should do and how their efforts are synergized to contribute towards a common goal. Secondly, different leadership approaches have different impacts on the followers. A good leadership approach is one that engages the participants, and makes them enthusiastic to positively contribute towards common goals. Also, good leadership supports the leader and followers in pursing personal goals, such as career advancement (Asif et al., 2019; Duggan et al., 2015; Seljemo, Viksveen & Ree, 2020).

Describe a leader whom you have seen use such behaviors and skills, or a situation where you have seen these behaviors and skills used in practice.

A leader who uses the described behavior is the unit nurse manager. She is responsible for managing nurse personnel in the unit. She has applied a structured leadership approach in which all the nurses understand that she is the leader while they are the followers. There are clear authority lines that describe her position as a nurse manager. In addition, she applies a good leadership approach that has resulted in the nurse personnel being satisfied with her leadership. She engages the nurses in consultative discussions before making major leadership decisions. In addition, shoe listens to and incorporates their pinions into the decisions (Finkelman, 2019).

Explain to what extent these skills were effective and how their practice impacted the workplace.

The two skills have been effective for the unit nurse manager. Firstly, the skills have resulted in high nurse personnel satisfaction levels. The nurses praise her leadership approach, reporting that it is consultative thereby allowing them to express their opinions and contribute to the decisions that affect them. Secondly, the skills have resulted in improved nurse performances. The nurses feel supported and are motivated and enthusiastic in providing the best possible care. This has resulted in the unit consistently meeting or exceeding nursing performance expectations (Finkelman, 2019).

Discussion 1: Leadership Theories in Practice

A walk through the Business section of any bookstore or a quick Internet search on the topic will reveal a seemingly endless supply of writings on leadership. Formal research literature is also teeming with volumes on the subject.

However, your own observation and experiences may suggest these theories are not always so easily found in practice. Not that the potential isn’t there; current evidence suggests that leadership factors such as emotional intelligence and transformational leadership behaviors, for example, can be highly effective for leading nurses and organizations.

Yet, how well are these theories put to practice? In this Discussion, you will examine formal leadership theories. You will compare these theories to behaviors you have observed firsthand and discuss their effectiveness in impacting your organization.

To Prepare:

  • Review the Resources and examine the leadership theories and behaviors introduced.
  • Identify two to three scholarly resources, in addition to this Module’s readings, that evaluate the impact of leadership behaviors in creating healthy work environments.

 (pick of your choice)

  • Reflect on the leadership behaviors presented in the three resources that you selected for review.

Write two key insights you had from the scholarly resources you selected. Describe a leader whom you have seen use such behaviors and skills, or a situation where you have seen these behaviors and skills used in practice. Be specific and provide examples. Then, explain to what extent these skills were effective and how their practice impacted the workplace.
