NURS 6003 Transition to Graduate Study for Nursing Walden University
Discussion: Networking Opportunities
In this module, you begin laying the foundation for your academic and professional success. Your efforts begin with a vision that includes your own definition of success. Your vision may vary from those of your colleagues, but this does not mean you have to take these first steps alone.
Walden University and the College of Nursing also have a vision and mission, which include helping you to make your own vision a reality. Members of your new academic community, such as faculty, support teams, and fellow students, can also be helpful. Current practitioners and other member of the professional community can also help you to clarify your vision.
This Module’s Discussion asks you to consider how the Walden mission and vision as well as the College of Nursing’s mission and vision apply to your professional and academic goals. You will also begin to identify individuals and teams who can help you along the way as you begin designing the “blueprint”—your Academic Success and Professional Development Plan—that will guide you toward your own vision for academic and professional success. Finally, you will explain the importance of networking and how it can help you achieve your professional and academic goals NURS 6003 Transition to Graduate Study for Nursing Walden University.

My Goals and University Mission, Vision, and Outcomes
My name is zzz, and I have been working as a psychiatric RN since December 2018. One of the many reasons I chose to further my education via Walden University was the flexibility of online learning. I completed my BSN online through WGU and had a very positive experience being able to work at my own pace. As far as my own professional and career goals, upon completion of the program, I hope to work alongside other psychiatric NPs and MDs to absorb the knowledge and expertise of my peers and colleagues. I hope to inspire psychiatric patients to be the best version of themselves and help guide them to be contributing members of society.
After reviewing Walden University’s mission, vision, and goals, I believe I picked the best school suited for my academic and professional goals as a psychiatric/ mental health nurse practitioner. According to Walden University (2022b), the university aims to prepare graduate students for the diverse opportunities available throughout the healthcare field and their community upon completion of their program. They equip their students to bring positive social change and equality within the healthcare system, individuals, and communities. With the new age of social media, one of my goals is to use networking and technology to spread my knowledge for positive social change to individuals across the globe.
After reading the MSN program outcomes, I believe I will be set to be a strong, knowledgeable, and competent practitioner. My professional goals include being the best practitioner I can be for the safety and well-being of my patients. Outcome #1 explains how graduates will contribute to “…high-quality healthcare delivery, advancement of the nursing profession, and social change” (Walden University 2022a). At the end of this program, I believe I will feel confident delivering such services to my patients and society. Throughout my courses, I plan to think critically, utilize evidence-based research, and reach out to the resources Walden offers to expand my ability to better care for my patients NURS 6003 Transition to Graduate Study for Nursing Walden University.
Networking
I plan to utilize the networking skills I learn through Walden when I am ready to expand my clinical skills and open my own practice. According to Schmidt (n.d.), networking is an excellent tool in healthcare to connect with healthcare professionals and scholars globally to become change agents within the healthcare system. Before I can open my own practice, I will have to use my networking skills to gain a solid foundation for my career before venturing on my own. Once I graduate, I plan to use these skills to help me find a job best suited for me. I will be able to compare the pros and cons of hospitals and expand my horizons beyond the hospitals nearest to me. I will also be able to find specific people I would want to work with to open a practice. While I am still in school, I will have to network to find a preceptor for my clinicals. I plan to do my clinicals within the hospital I already work at, though I will need to reach out to other departments to find two nurse practitioners I can follow.

I have reviewed the Walden and College of Nursing mission and Vision statement and I intend to adopt it. I have been an RN since 2008. I have worked as an ICU nurse, home health nurse, public nurse, and custody nurse, despite these roles I have not gone back to school to advance my degree. I believe this is the right time. I need to expand my horizon as I intend to promote patient advocacy and a seasoned master’s prepared RN.
My goal is to contribute to being a voice in my community and provide quality care for my patient using evidence-based practice.
My friend May introduced me to Walden University, when I researched Walden’s site the vision, mission, and share courtesy and helpfulness of the staff I spoke to spoke volumes about the school. Their vision of contributing to “advancing the greater global good” (Walden University, 2022b) and the mission of preparing students to positively affect social change (Walden University, 2022b) mirrored my own personal goals. Walden University staff and faculty that I was opportune to talk to cemented my decision to enroll as a student despite my own reservation to online classes by their willingness and enthusiasm to help. I intend to be a positive change in my environment and society and I believe I will achieve this at Walden University.

Discussion: Using the Walden Library
Where can you find evidence to inform your thoughts and scholarly writing? Throughout your degree program, you will use research literature to explore ideas, guide your thinking, and gain new insights. As you search the research literature, it is important to use resources that are peer-reviewed and from scholarly journals. You may already have some favorite online resources and databases that you use or have found useful in the past. For this Discussion, you explore databases available through the Walden Library.
Note: Unless otherwise noted, initial postings to Discussions are due on or before Day 3, and response postings are due on or before Day 6. You are required to participate in the Discussion on at least three different days (a different day for main post and each response). It is important to adhere to the weekly time frame to allow others ample time to respond to your posting. In addition, you are expected to respond to questions directed toward your own initial posting in a timely manner.
To Prepare:
- Review the information presented in the Learning Resources for using the Walden Library, searching the databases, and evaluating online resources.
- Begin searching for a peer-reviewed article that pertains to your practice area and interests you.
By Day 3 of Week 4
Post the following:
Using proper APA formatting, cite the peer-reviewed article you selected that pertains to your practice area and is of particular interest to you and identify the database that you used to search for the article. Explain any difficulties you experienced while searching for this article. Would this database be useful to your colleagues? Explain why or why not. Would you recommend this database? Explain why or why not.
By Day 6 of Week 4
Respond to at least two of your colleagues’ posts by offering suggestions/strategies for working with this database from your own experience, or offering ideas for using alternative resources.
Urgent Care
I currently work in urgent care as a registered nurse and would like to eventually work in urgent care as a nurse practitioner as well so I find urgent care-related topics interesting. I found an article discussing the reasons people choose to seek out either emergency or urgent care healthcare services. The article discusses the rising need for both emergency and urgent care services and the benefits of having more urgent care clinics for patients to have access to (Coster et al., 2017). Some of these reasons include emergency department overcrowding, higher healthcare costs associated with emergency care and higher waiting times for patients to be seen by a provider (Coster et al., 2017). This is something I have dealt with firsthand as a nurse in urgent care taking care of many patients who were waiting in the emergency room and left after several hours of waiting to try and get quicker services at an urgent care instead. I also care for patients needing emergency services but do not want to go there due to the high costs of the emergency room.
Choosing a Database
The Walden University library has endless resources for students to use. One resource that is found on the library website is different scholarly databases. I used PubMed to search for urgent care-related articles. A difficulty I faced when searching for different articles was finding an article I thought would be helpful but not having access to the complete article. When I clicked on the portion of the website to get to other websites that show the full article, it wanted me to log-in in order to view the article. At first, I was unsure if I had log-in information and thought I would be unable to use this article. Eventually, I figured out how to log-in through the school but then Walden showed me they did not have access to the full article. There was an option to request it through the Document Delivery Service which entails the Walden library requesting the article on my behalf and emailing the link for the article to my school email account. This is a helpful feature if someone has the time to wait for an article. If you need it quickly or within the same day, it would not be a great option so you would have to find another article to use that you can view in full.
I also discovered a feature that I will use when conducting research in the future which was to use the filters for free full text. This helped me find full articles directly on PubMed so I was ensured that every article that resulted from my search would have the entire article. PubMed is a database that has over thirty-four million articles relating to biomedical literature (PubMed, n.d.). I do think this database would be useful for my colleagues since it only has articles pertaining to the medical field. I would also recommend this database due to its wide range of medicine and healthcare-related topics that articles cover within the database.
