Strategies for Academic Portfolios

In the realm of marketing, a successful branding strategy is one of the most important contributors to organizational success. A solid branding strategy can help add visibility and credibility to a company’s products.

Similarly, nurse-scholars can build a personal brand to add visibility and credibility to their work. You can begin building your brand by developing and maintaining an academic portfolio. Such an activity can help share the results of your efforts and contribute to your success. This Module’s Discussion asks you to consider and share strategies for building your portfolio.

Note: Unless otherwise noted, initial postings to Discussions are due on or before Day 3, and response postings are due on or before Day 6. You are required to participate in the Discussion on at least three different days (a different day for main post and each response). It is important to adhere to the weekly time frame to allow others ample time to respond to your posting. In addition, you are expected to respond to questions directed toward your own initial posting in a timely manner.

To Prepare:

  • Reflect on strategies that you can pursue in developing portfolios or portfolio elements that focus on academic achievements.
  • Review one or more samples from your own research of resources focused on portfolio development.

By Day 3 of Week 8

Post an explanation of at least two strategies for including academic activities and accomplishments into your professional development goals. Then, explain how those goals may align with the University’s emphasis on social change. Be specific and provide examples.

By Day 6 of Week 8

Respond to at least two of your colleagues’ posts by offering additional ideas regarding academic achievements to include or offering alternative ways of presenting the current achievements.

Professional and Academic Portfolios

Introduction

Professional development goals are essential in an individual’s career journey as it enables one to develop professional skills, knowledge and position. In healthcare, professionals must also have their professional development goals. In my professional development, there are three primary goals I would want to achieve. First, I will focus on continuing with education and training to help equip me with skills, knowledge and medical techniques that will help provide quality care. Secondly, I will increase my technological skills as the healthcare setting is shifting towards technology use in service delivery. Lastly, it is to provide patient-centered care, which helps improve patient experience and satisfaction. Keeping track of my accomplishments and goals is vital as it helps in my career growth. A professional portfolio is essential in keeping track of the activities and achievements. This paper discusses the strategies used to include academic activities and accomplishments and how professional goals align with social change.

Strategies to Include Academic Activities and Accomplishments

Building professional and academic portfolios is one strategy for including educational activities and accomplishments. A professional portfolio is essential for any professional as it demonstrates an individual’s actions and highlights professional growth. A professional portfolio helps provide evidence of the nurse’s skills, knowledge, achievements, and professional experience in nursing (Cope & Murray, 2018). A professional portfolio includes training and competency records, activities supporting learning and assessment, professional experiences, education transcripts, and professional licenses, among others (Burns, 2022). Developing a professional portfolio is impactful when promoting yourself to potential employers by documenting clinical experiences, competencies and accomplishments. A professional portfolio helps prove clinical outcomes that help employers identify prominent individuals’ strengths and expertise. Additionally, a portfolio is essential as nurses can store and manage their credentials, revalidations and licenses, which allows them quickly validate and authenticate themselves while seeking employment.

Another strategy that can include academic activities and accomplishments is utilizing online networks like E-portfolios to help include educational activities and achievements online on virtual platforms. E-portfolios are impactful in demonstrating progress, achieving coursework, and providing evidence of clinical outcomes (Green et al., 2014). Therefore, as the world transitions to incorporating digital technologies, E-platforms will help one manage their professional accomplishments and academic activities. In an E-portfolio, one can include clinical experiences, scans of licenses and academic transcripts, short and long-term goals, and other details that help one prove themselves to potential employers.

How Goals Align with University Social Change

I feel that my professional development goals and academic accomplishments align with the university’s social change. In the university, social change involves creating and applying ideas, strategies and actions that promote worth. My professional goals of continuing education will help me acquire skills and knowledge that will help guide my decision-making on appropriate ideas and strategies to implement during practice. Secondly, technology is becoming an integral part of healthcare, and increasing knowledge of technology will help achieve a positive social change. Lastly, providing patient-centered care will involve working on clinical experiences that will help enhance my professional growth. Therefore, my clinical expertise will help align with positive social change by working cohesively with tutors to create a positive atmosphere.

 Conclusion

In conclusion, professional development is essential for individuals seeking potential employment. Nurses must document their professional growth and accomplishments towards their career success. Academic and professional portfolios enable them to include educational activities, clinical experiences and achievements, which helps authenticate and validate potential employers. Therefore, nurses must continue building on their academic and professional portfolios to support their professional growth.

Hi Sherwin. Great post. In addition to what you have said, professional growth for an individual is important as this can be a source of satisfaction for a person. Setting goals is the stepping stone in the journey of success. When you divide your objectives into smaller breakdowns and be able to achieve them one by one, you feel inspired to continue (Bell, 2021). This is what I do with my everyday life. Juggling work, school, and family, time management is an important key factor in achieving professional growth. As I achieved these goals, I set myself up, I feel a sense of contentment and fulfillment and keeps me moving forward. If we want to see any change in a certain aspect, we must start the change within us first as our minds are driven by passion and energetic compassion.  And through the process, we must find the perfect people and instrument to help us achieved those changes. Thank you.

Sherwin, I liked your post and the idea of utilizing E-portfolios when networking; students and professionals store their academic work and files in their academic portfolio, these files includes nurses’ case files, resumes, educational qualifications, goals, and achievements electronically. This tool is not only handy but essential. This is a great tool for building a nursing professional go-to portfolio, and nurses must continue this great circle of building their portfolios. Keeping a professional portfolio is an added plus in marketing and organizes oneself for future endeavors and academic pursuit (McMillan & Parker, 2014)

I also agree that a great and organized professional portfolio will help the nurses in their job-seeking  because all the credentials are organized and readily available once needed.

Hi Sherwin,

I agree that using an electronic portfolio to show development is a terrific idea. E-portfolios can encourage self-directed learning and support professional development (Mohammed, 2018). Professionals in the healthcare industry are accountable for managing their own careers, advancement, and maintenance of current knowledge in the field. It is ideal if these exercises’ supporting practices begin throughout their undergraduate years (Mohammed, 2018). The interest in these technologies is expanding as educators investigate the potential of electronic or e-portfolios as a vehicle for fostering deep learning and enhancing continuing professional and individual advancement. Assessing one’s self-learning in the areas of aptitude, cognition, and achievements can be done with accuracy using an e-portfolio.

Hello Sherwin,

I noticed you presented e-portfolios as a potential strategy to promote your academic achievements and accomplishments. I read in our academic resources that it is actually detrimental to have zero online presence. “An estimated 60-80% of employers do online searches of potential hires.” (Hannans & Olivo, 2017). One popular platform you can use for your e-portfolio is LinkedIn. “LinkedIn is specifically for building career profiles and making professional connections.” (Hannans & Olivo, 2017). Regardless of how you showcase your credentials, the most important concept is keeping your portfolio up-to-date. “The nurse can use a portfolio to document competencies and achievements.” (Burns, 2018). Keeping your portfolio up-to-date allows you to keep track of expiring certifications and licensure. This idea will also allow you to “explore ways to advance both yourself and your profession.” (Burns, 2018). Continuous evaluation of your portfolio creates an opportunity for self-reflection and identifying areas of improvement.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading your post. I never even knew about an e-portfolio, genius idea! Hi Sherwin,

I agree with you on the importance of the use of an e-portfolio for networking. “An estimated 60-80% of employers do online searches for potential hires” (Hannans & Olivo, 2017). “Portfolios are considered an essential tool in demonstrating professional accomplishments and documenting professional growth for a variety of professions” (Burns, 2018). “Opportunity is a professional networking platform used all over the world. Users are introduced to relevant people in their field. The user can find job opportunities and generate leads” (Norton, 2021). “The structure and presentations of a portfolio will clearly vary according to the individual’s preferences, experiences and career goals” (Casey & Egan, 2013).

RE: Discussion – Week 8

Nursing professionals play an important role in providing and promoting healthcare in the community and across society. It is important for nurses to identify the strategies for including academic activities and accomplishments in their professional development goals. There are several strategies that I will use to ensure my academic activities and accomplishments are included in my professional development goals. The first strategy that I will adopt is keeping my professional portfolio current and updated by consistently including details regarding my training, experience, education as well as accolades (Parker et al., 2014). I will consistently include my professional experience from annual reviews, formal education, conferences, competencies, and reflective practices (Williams, 2021). This strategy will be useful in aligning my professional accomplishments and development goals with Walden University’s driving force of social change.

The second strategy that I will use to include my academic activities and accomplishments into my professional development goals is establishing and developing online networking. Building, nurturing as well as maintaining my professional network can have significant impacts in the achievement of my professional development goals (Stobierski, 2019). Creating an online identity as well as networking is one of the best way of including my academic activities and accomplishments in my professional goals. Establishing an online identity will provide me with the opportunity to show my professional competencies, abilities, qualifications, and future goals. These are aspects that are aligned with the social change focus of the learning institution. Walden University is driven by the need to provide lifelong learning that will propel the graduates for social change within their respective communities and societal setting.

Hi Patricia. Excellent points. I agree how online networking have a great impact in the setting we are in. With online networking, this allows us to meet other people that can help us in different ways. The people we will meet could be an expert of their fields and can teach us ways to excel in the field we chose. Networking will also allow us to have an arena where we can exchange information, advice, and support on challenges, experiences, and goals is a key benefit of networking because it allows you to gain new insights that you may not have otherwise thought of (Klawitter, 2021).  In fact, there was one study by Utz & Breuer (2019) that has shown that “users of social network sites designed for professional purposes, such as LinkedIn, report higher professional informational benefits than nonusers.” This only means that the bigger our network is, the more we will grow and be able to make lasting connections. Thank you.

Hello Patricia,

Great post! Keeping your portfolio updated with your most recent training, experience, and education, as well as building a solid professional network, are excellent ways to develop your professional developmental goals. Another consideration will be to add personal experiences you have had throughout your time at Walden University. You can include areas you have thrived in as well as areas you struggled in and how you managed those struggles to succeed. There are several structures you can use to create your professional developmental goals, including a Cake mix. A Cake Mix format focuses on personal experiences and events that helped shape unique skills and qualities. (Casey, 2013) This will be a great way to add a personal touch to your portfolio. Best wishes to you for continuing your education and future career.

Hi Patricia,

I enjoyed reading your post since it was so informative. I agree that networking is very important to potential professional development. Networking can be very difficult. I think how difficult it is many times for nurse practitioner students to network to find preceptors. This is why it is important to establish connections early and always maintain those even if you have moved facilities or jobs. I think networking can benefit an individual overall within their career. Per the Association for Talent Development, “building and maintaining a strong network within your company gives you stronger collaborative skills and greater creativity, inspires new ways of thinking, and increases your chances of learning something new” (Kimberl, 2018). I think this quote does a great job of showing some of the many benefits of professional networking. I think networking can be simpler and potentially more beneficial once an individual understands the three types of professional networking. These include operational, personal, and strategic (Professional Networking in Psychology 2022). Operational refers to making connections with those you work with frequently within your organization, personal refers to your own relationships with individuals outside of work and your career field, and strategic refers to connections you make with the intention to benefit yourself and your career (Professional Networking in Psychology 2022).

Hello Patricia.

I really loved reading your post. I think your second strategy about online networking is really helpful. Have you read any research about social media online networking sites like Facebook and Instagram? An online quantitative and qualitative survey asking students how well they felt social media networking had aided their learning was conducted(Tower, 2014). The analysis revealed that Students believed social media networking sites to be a cutting-edge means of providing study assistance that aided learning by raising self-efficacy (Tower, 2014). Students talked about how it helped to encourage peer learning and academic engagement (Tower, 2014). Social media sites like Facebook have the ability to help students take their academic development to a deeper level (Tower, 2014).

Hi Patricia,

Excellent post. Working to continually build and restructure your portfolio is an excellent way to illustrate your drive to maintain your professional qualifications accurate.  “By creating and maintaining a portfolio this can also enable nurses to identify their strengths and learning needs, and to develop a learning plan to address these needs (Cope & Murray, 2018).” I also, agree that using online networking can assist in boosting your career by meeting people who can open doors to new career or academic avenues that you otherwise may never have known were available for you. With healthcare growing at such a rapid pace nurse practitioners are becoming a valuable commodity, especially in rural areas where quality care is scarce or limited. By staying vigilant in networking you will benefit your career greatly. Best wishes in your chosen career path.

RE: Discussion – Week 8

Nursing is a career field that requires constant growth, development, and education. This is not only to stay the most up to date on current practices, but to also be the best professional one can possibly be within their field. As nurses and advanced practice registered nurses (APRN), we have educational requirements to fulfill in order to be able to renew our licenses. I think many professionals just try to do the bare minimum when it comes to continuing education requirements set by the state boards of nursing. However, one goal I have is to approach these continuing education requirements with good intent and actually find educational opportunities that relate to my practice and help me become a better professional. The American Nurses Association states that, “continuing education is about providing the best care, developing skills, and gaining greater knowledge” (Continuing Education, n.d.). One can find educational topics on virtually everything including topics just for nurses.

While still practicing as a registered nurse, I find becoming certified in my field of nursing to be an important way to bring academic activities and accomplishments into my professional development. I have recently switched specialties so this is something I have decided to aim to complete in order to become more knowledgeable and prepared within my new specialty of nursing. Becoming certified in a specialty typically requires practicing as a nurse for a certain number of hours and passing an examination (The Benefits of Advanced Nursing Certifications & List of Certification Boards, n.d.). Being certified in a specialty can benefit both the nurse themselves and their patients since the certification establishes the nurse as a professional and having a high level of competence in that nursing field (The Benefits of Advanced Nursing Certifications & List of Certification Boards, n.d.). Having these certifications can also open doors for nurses through different employment opportunities (The Benefits of Advanced Nursing Certifications & List of Certification Boards, n.d.). There are also certifications that APRNs can complete and that is something I will look into after practicing as an APRN for a few years in the future.

Walden University has placed an emphasis on their missions and goals towards enacting social change. I believe becoming a well-rounded nurse and, in the future, also becoming a well-educated APRN is one way I can assist with the social change initiatives Walden has set in place. Staying up to date within the field of nursing and how to best help all patients I come in contact with can be a large part of this. I aim to improve health outcomes for all of my patients and these educational activities and accomplishments will be a factor in achieving that goal.

Ashton, I read your post and I strongly agree that indeed” Nursing is a career field that requires constant education and development” For a registered nurse continued education is essential because nursing is an evolving field and for APRNs, more education is needed because it is an advanced and specialty field so more skills is needed. Being in Walden university will open the windows and making possible to acquire those skills with new and advanced technology. I agree that every RN should find their passion and area in nursing where they will thrive, and they will make sure they acquire all the skills needed for that field through education and networking which will enhance social change and increase their area of influence. (Ana. (n.d). As the nurses advance and new skills are acquired, they will update and beef up their academic portfolios, for future academic and work careers.

Hi Ashton,

Certification is a great way to celebrate and show your expertise and competence in managing patients within a specialized population (Relias, n.d.). Additionally, certification provides professional opportunities and correlates to improved patient outcomes (Relias, n.d.). From personal experience, I will say that certification also provides a sense of pride in your knowledge and understanding of your nursing specialty as well. Kudos to you for having the drive to work towards your certification and for seeing how it will benefit you professionally!

Reflecting on how continuing education courses and your certification are related to your professional goals will increase the professional value of these activities and may even help keep you engaged in your education and professional growth (Biedermann, et al., 2022). I suggest you use your professional portfolio to record your reflections and show how your continuing education classes and certification have shaped your practice as a registered nurse and how they are related to your professional development goals (Casy & Egan, 2013).

Hi Ashton,

I agree that continuing one’s education is imperative for future growth. Continuing education will help in the development of expertise in one’s specialty. The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulations requires nurses to renew their licenses every two years along with having 20 hours of continuing education. “The American Nurses Association (ANA) Enterprise has a wide variety of courses in accessible learning formats to both meet your license or certification renewal needs and advance your career” (Continuing Education, n.d.). “Research demonstrates the need for nurses to update their knowledge, through continuing nursing education” (Kourkouta, 2021).

RE: Discussion – Week 8

COLLAPSE

Hello Ashton

great work on recognition of the important role nurse play and the need to evolve to fit in the dynamic healthcare environment though continuous education. To be certified as a practicing registered nurse, Nursing Professional Development NPD is a body mandated to regular and offer continuous education to nurses and APRN. Brunt & Morris (2018) emphasize  that Nursing Professional Development NPD has different scopes such as; being a learning facilitator, change agent, mentor, leader, a champion for scientific inquiry and advocating for the  NPD specialty in the dynamic healthcare environment. NPD certification equips its members with important knowledge and skills to be competent healthcare providers within and beyond the acute care setting to include; home care, clinics, and other specialized care facilities. NPD specialists have expanded their role to support the transition of nurses across learning and practice to fit in the new demands such as nurses acting as navigators, health coaches, community health workers, and many new roles in nursing informatics, telehealth, and patient safety.

RE: Discussion – Week 8

COLLAPSE

Hello Ashton,

Congratulations on switching to a specialty. I am sure specializing in the nursing field requires additional licensure or certification. You mentioned that having additional certification helps with career development. Creating an electronic portfolio (e-portfolio) is a great way to not only showcase, but also organize your additional credentials. A portfolio in general is a, “visual representation of the individual, their experience, strengths, abilities and skills.” (Casey & Egan, 2010). It sounds as if you are continually improving your skill set. An e-portfolio is a convenient way to organize your achievements while also making those achievements available to potential employers and colleagues. “Digital connections may enhance your knowledge is areas such as healthcare policy, current healthcare trends and research.” (Hannans & Olivo, 2017). Ambitious people like you thrive with increased networking and educational opportunities.
