Nursing Specialty Program

My choice of nursing specialty is Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP). The role of a PMHNP is to assess, develop diagnoses, and provide treatment for people with mental disorders (Chapman et al., 2019). I decided to choose the PMHNP program because I have a passion to help people, families, and groups with different mental disorders, and help in putting them to the recovery road. Since PMHNPs significantly contribute to policy development and healthcare reform, I chose the PMHNP program to be able to influence policies and reforms that support people with mental disorders. I also hope to increase awareness about mental health illnesses within the local communities and also online to reduce the stigmatization associated with mental health illness (Stuart, 2016).  Nursing Specialty Program Essay Paper

However, I was torn between choosing the family nurse practitioner (FNP) specialty and PMHNP. This is because I also passionate about providing holistic and patient-centered care and work within any type of care setting; this is very applicable in both specialties.

One of the professional organizations affiliated to PMHNP specialty is the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA). APNA organization is dedicated to the practice of psychiatric-mental health, promoting wellness, preventing mental health problems, and provision of care and treatment to individuals with mental disorders. APNA also facilitates professional development for psychiatric mental health nurses to advance their education and the required resources for professional development.

All PMH nurses are qualified to become members of APNA at a reasonable cost (&135.00 annually). APNA membership consists of about 40% of psychiatric RNs, and 60% of APRNs. Members of APNA practice within all settings.
