Include the following in your portfolio:

Demographics: Include your name, email, phone number, and any other relevant contact information.

Personal Mission Statement / Goals: In 500-750 words, describe how your personal ethics and values align with the mission and vision of the health care organization where you intend to work. Include professional goals and your plans to achieve them.

Education/CEUs, Certifications, and Licenses: Provide documentation of education from accredited universities and colleges, including graduation dates, and any professional certifications or licenses. If you have them, include copies of diplomas, certificates, etc.

Personal Mission Statement / Goals:

My personal mission statement as a nurse practitioner and leader is to provide personalized, compassionate care to all patients irrespective of their demographic identifies and differences that could influence their health outcomes, such as disability, age, gender, religion and nationality. It is my personal belief that all humans are equal, and it is this awareness that differentiates humans from other animals as higher thinking beings. As such, all humans should be treated equally with integrity and care. Throughout my 21 years of clinical experience as a health care practitioner, I have developed a caring attitude with my intention to provide personalized compassionate care to all patients. In addition, I have discerned the importance of patients and their families appreciating my efforts, especially when I go beyond the normal duty to meet their needs and see them through their illness.

I expect to continue providing competent and safe care that both patients and their families need. In providing competent care, I will employ evidence-based practice that makes use of scientific/empirical knowledge. This is knowledge generated through research that is based on deductive, rational thinking and scientific methods. With this knowledge I will improve on my competence as a nurse and gain the capacity to provide patients with the best possible nursing care.

Besides the use of scientific evidence in improving my knowledge and providing the best possible care, I will use the knowledge to improve my understanding of different nursing concepts. For instance, the knowledge is helpful in understanding the concept of being a human being, a concept that helps in empathizing with the patient and understanding the different aspects of what it means to be a human being, to include physical, spiritual, social and psychological aspects. Also, understanding of the concepts will help in understanding of self, peers, colleagues, community and patients’ expectations and responsibilities in the nursing profession, especially with regards to addressing and enhancing the limits provided in the professional nursing code of ethics in ensuring high quality standards.

Furthermore, I seek to provide ethical care that indicates an appreciation of the ethical parameters that apply to the profession. This is mainly derived from the surrounding. Through interactions with the environment, I have gained and continue to gain the capacity to make informed moral choices when confronted with various ethical situations. In this regard, I always strive to understand what constitutes the environment in any situation, especially the aspects that relate to the nature of health care. This understanding is helpful in determining care that is available to and appropriate for the patient.

Overall, my decision to pursue a nursing career is galvanized by my passion for caring for others. Patients are unique within the grouping of ‘others’ since they require care from others to improve health and wellness, with their healthy likely to deteriorate or stagnate in the negative spectrum if they do not receive care. Patients have trust in nurses to provide the care they require, and I do not have any intention to violate that trust. Also, nursing is practiced within a set of rules and regulations intended to protect the stakeholders, and I believe that being a professional nurse equips me to provide competent nursing care within the set of rules and regulations.


Leadership and Mentorship

Leadership in nursing is an important aspect that nurtures productivity and professionalism among junior nurses. An effective leader should be a mentor to impart role modeling and offer professional expertise that guides mentees explore different aspects in the nursing field. During my practicum, my mentor at the emergency room (ER) exhibited transformational leadership with characteristics that enabled us to bond hence the importance of an effective mentor relationship.

Firstly, my mentor practiced transformational leadership and cultivated a positive work environment to develop quick judgment and decision-making skills. The adoption of transformational leadership helps reduce work-related stresses and burnout, increasing nurses’ well-being (Seljemo et al., 2020). In turn, the quality of nursing care also improves tremendously. This style precipitated essential characteristics that promoted a positive relationship and bonding with the mentor. Remarkably, my mentor always inspired me to keep improving my nursing skills and put complete trust in me to make good decisions regarding patient care. Ideally, leadership influences subordinates to generate ideas on challenging assignments (Jahidi, 2020). It stimulates the mentee to be innovative and creative. Moreover, my mentor was tolerant enough despite my occasional mistakes and always accepted responsibility for my actions. The virtue of tolerance in my mentor increased my optimism that I had been allowed to perfect myself and thrive professionally. The mentor was willing to take responsibility for all my decisions pushed me to perfection. The safety culture in nursing starts with transformational leadership (Seljemo et al.,2020). Mentors’ flexibility to accommodate others’ opinions is a character that can effectively bond me to them.

Next, an effective mentor-mentee relationship results in advancing the leader’s professional development. Leaders and their subordinates usually commit to achieving similar goals (Jahid, 2020). This synergy, combined with imparting knowledge and teaching others, can make an individual improve. Again, for the mentee, a proper relationship encourages career progression through acquiring new skills and increases mentee performance and competency.

In conclusion, a good nurse mentor must possess impeccable leadership skills to foster an effective relationship between the mentor and the mentee. Therefore, nursing practicum experience should be mentorship-oriented to develop future leaders.
