Mental Health Assessment Tool: Quality of Life Enjoyment and Satisfaction Questionnaire (Q-LES-Q)

The Quality of Life Enjoyment and Satisfaction Questionnaire (Q-LES-Q) is a psychometric psychological test that measures outcomes in psychiatry research. Because it is a psychometric test, it is objective with test elements and scoring procedures that are structured (APAPC, n.d.). To save time and be a quick valuable resource for clinicians in clinical practice, a shorter form of the longer test was developed but which retained the accuracy and sensitivity of the longer version. Researchers named it the Q-LES-Q SF with ‘SF’ standing for ‘short form’ (Rush et al., 2019). This instrument or assessment tool is used to assess a patient’s life satisfaction and degree of enjoyment within the past one week and is designed with a Likert-type structure and scoring. The scale ranges from 1 (very poor) to 5 (very good). Individual psychometric items are scored and then the total is determined as a percentage score at the end of the test. In summary, this quality of life (QoL) outcome measure assesses the patient’s enjoyment and satisfaction in different areas of daily functioning in a self-reported manner (Riendeau et al., 2018). The purpose of this paper is to discuss this assessment tool and determine its use in psychotherapy and psychiatry in general with reference to the psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner or PMHNP.  Quality of Life Enjoyment and Satisfaction Questionnaire Essay Paper

Three Important Components of the Q-LES-Q Psychiatric Interview and Why they Are Important

The Q-LES-Q is a psychometric psychiatry test. That means it is objective, structured, and valid in terms of results. Studies have shown that the test actually measures exactly what it is supposed to measure. To achieve this status of a psychometric test, it has a structured scoring procedure and format that has a total of eight components. Three of these that I find important are physical health and activities, feelings, and general activities (OPAPC, n.d.). The structure component of physical health/ activities in this tool assesses any physical symptoms such as pain, malaise, sleep patterns, and sight. This is important because when one has physical symptoms; their enjoyment of life activities is reduced. Consequently, their QoL drops correspondingly.

The component of feelings how much the patient has felt happy, satisfied with life, relaxed, able to deal with their problems, and so on (OPAPC, n.d.). This is also important in that thoughts and feelings influence behavior in a person. This is the doctrine behind the psychotherapeutic treatment of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) that makes use of cognitive restructuring (Corey, 2017). Cognitive remodelling has as its objective to change thinking in the hope that it will translate to behavioral change. The third component is general activities and serves as the summary of the other previous components. This is the part that assesses the patient’s level of satisfaction with life by posing questions such as how satisfied the patient has been in the past week with their family relationships, physical health, social relationships, and overall sense of well-being amongst other things. I find this important because this is the only way that the therapist can get an insight into what the patient feels about their situation.  Quality of Life Enjoyment and Satisfaction Questionnaire Essay Paper

Psychometric Properties of the Q-LES-Q Rating Scale

There are two types of psychiatric or psychological tests. These are psychometric tests and nonpsychometric tests. The Q-LES-Q test is a psychometric test and the properties that confer this status to it are objectivity and the fact that it is structured and not arbitrary (Riendeau et al., 2018; Rush et al., 2019). By being structured, the scoring elements in the tool follow a certain pattern that is tested and validated. On objectivity, this tool does not take into account the subjective views or interpretations of the therapist that would render it nonpsychometric.

Appropriateness of the Rating Scale for the PMHNP

It is appropriate to use this scale with client during the psychiatric interview because it enables the PMHNP to have a deeper understanding of the factors that contribute to the clinical manifestations of the patient’s condition. It is therefore helpful to a PMHNP’s psychiatric assessment because it provides material with which she can compare the patient’s presentation and the diagnostic criteria in the DSM-5 (APA, 2013).
