Clinical Inquiry on Interventions for Personality Disorders: Searching Databases
In everyday nursing practice, nurse professionals encounter diverse clinical issues of interest that present challenges in terms of how they can be addressed. Most of these challenges are in the form of not being certain of the correct or appropriate evidence-based interventions to use in the management of the issue of interest. The clinical issue of interest earlier chosen for this discussion is personality disorders and their evidence-based management. Personality disorders are a distinct diagnostic category of mental disorders in the fifth and latest edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders or DSM-5. It includes amongst others borderline personality disorder, paranoid personality disorder, and narcissistic personality disorder (APA, 2013).
To determine the availability of peer-reviewed scholarly evidence in support of specific interventions against personality disorders, a search was conducted in reputable research databases namely CINAHL, PubMed, Cochrane, and ProQuest. This was done following the PICOT model which provided keywords (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019; Melnyk et al., 2009). The original search employed the terms “personality disorders.” “treatment” and “management” combined and entered into the search engines of the different databases. This initial search yielded 6,321 peer-reviewed articles. After this, the search was made to be more specific by introducing the Boolean operator “AND,” using it to combine the search terms. This effort enabled the achievement of more specific search results in the form of 61 articles. Four of these articles have been included in the references below as an illustration of the calibre of evidence available for the treatment of personality disorders.  Searching Databases Essay Example Lastly, the strategies that I might employ to increase the rigor and effectiveness of the search from the databases using the PICOT model include the use of specific filters. These include a specified publication period (e.g. the last 5, 10, or 15 year) and the type of research done (e.g. randomized controlled trials or RCTs or systematic reviews and meta-analyses).

The same holds true when searching for research evidence to guide your clinical inquiry and professional decisions. Developing a formula for an answerable, researchable question that addresses your need will make the search process much more effective. One such formula is the PICO(T) format.

In this Discussion, you will transform a clinical inquiry into a searchable question in PICO(T) format, so you can search the electronic databases more effectively and efficiently.   • Review the Resources and identify a clinical issue of interest that can form the basis of a clinical inquiry.
  • Review the materials offering guidance on using databases, performing keyword searches, and developing PICO(T) questions provided in the Resources.
  • Based on the clinical issue of interest and using keywords related to the clinical issue of interest, search at least two different databases in the Walden Library to identify at least four relevant peer-reviewed articles related to your clinical issue of interest. You should not be using systematic reviews for this assignment, select original research articles.
  • Review the Resources for guidance and develop a PICO(T) question of interest to you for further study. It is suggested that an Intervention-type PICOT question be developed as these seem to work best for this course.
