The Search Process

A comprehensive search of nursing and medical databases including PubMed, Web of Science, Wiley library, and CINAHL. The search targeted the most recent peer-reviewed studies published between 2015 and 2020. Search and key terms included breast cancer, incidence, risk factors, women 50 years, and mortality, and a combination of the search terms. In addition, statistics about the prevalence of breast cancer were obtained from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website.

Health Information from the Search

Breast cancer is the most prevalent type of cancer among women and the most important causes of mortality in women. Breast cancer is multifactorial and thus different factors contribute to breast cancer (Momenimovahed & Salehiniya, 2019). The risk of a woman having breast cancer in the US is 12.4%. Age is a major risk factor for breast cancer where women aged over 50 years are considered to be a higher risk of developing breast cancer (Momenimovahed & Salehiniya, 2019). Lifestyle factors associated with increased risk of breast cancer include obesity and overweight, alcohol intake, smoking, high intake of meat and fats, and lack of physical activities (Ataollahi et al., 2015). Air pollution and low socioeconomic status are also linked to increased risk of breast cancer.

Interpretation of the Findings

The findings indicate that apart from genetic factors, environmental and lifestyle factors significantly impact breast cancer incidence. Interventions aimed to educate community members about lifestyle modification such as consumption of a healthy diet and increasing physical activities are very important. Additionally, health disparities that hinder access to healthcare for people from low socioeconomic status should be addressed.
