The Role of the RN/APRN in Policy Evaluation

Policy evaluation presents an opportunity for nurses to assure quality of care by influencing nursing practice processes and standards. To be influential within the health care field, nurses must perceive themselves are professionals who have the responsibility and capacity to influence the health care delivery systems, both in their current and future forms. At its core, nurses provide professional nursing services based on caring and human health sciences. This implies that professional nursing operational framework values people in a holistic way while seeking to foster and advance health across all community levels and throughout the lifespan. These are nurses’ objectives that can be achieved only if the policies in place define and integrate appropriate standards to present the appropriate conditions for delivering nursing care (Misltead & Short, 2019).

Through participating in policy evaluation, nurses are able to identify the policies that work and how they can be improved, thereby shaping the care they provide today and in the future. In addition, participation in policy evaluation allows nurses to influence resource allocation that supports health care delivery. The policies determine where the available resources are used (Loversidge & Zurmehly, 2019). Besides that, participation in policy evaluation implies that nurses are actively participating in health policy decision-making processes that ultimately benefit patient outcomes. This is part of a structure for bringing about effective change, from operation direct nursing care to strategic health care delivery, and policy development at different government levels (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2020). In essence, professional nurses role in policy evaluation allows them to influence policies, contribute to nursing profession, and bridge the disparities between actual clinical practice and political strategic direction thereby being part of the decisions that impact access to care and quality of life.
