 Work Environment Assessment

A healthy work environment entails where employees, as well as the organizational management, are able to cooperate to constantly boost the employees’ welfare, safety, and health. It has a substantial effect on the employees’ welfare, safety, and health, considering that full-time jobs require individuals to dedicate a third of their lives to their places of work. Therefore, having a healthy work environment for all employees has become the top objective of every organization, whether big or small (Clark, 2019). This kind of work environment is important in nursing as it results in happy and vibrant nursing professionals who are able to deliver quality healthcare services, thus enhancing patients’ outcomes. Civility is among the major facets of a wholesome work environment, which refers to the conventional manner of speaking or behaving and significantly contributes to how nurse professionals relate to one another (Clark, 2019). This paper describes the results obtained from the work environment assessment, the concept presented in the article: Fostering Civility in Nursing Education and Practice, as well as suggests evidence-based strategies to create high-performance interprofessional teams.  Workplace Environment Assessment Essay Paper

Part 1

My work environment assessment score on the Clark Healthy Workplace Inventory was 78 out of 100, which is an indication of a mildly healthy work environment. In relation to the Clark Healthy Workplace Inventory, a score ranging from 70 to 79 is translated as a mildly healthy work environment. The inventory has 20 statements put on a scale of 1 to 5. Thus the score is obtained by multiplying the number of statements under each of the five scales by the specific scale then the sum of scores from each scale gives the overall score (78). In other words, the 6 top-rated statements were multiplied by 5 (completely true) to get 30, the next 7 statements fell under somewhat true, and so they were multiplied by 4 to get 28, followed by 6 statements that fell under neutral and were multiplied by 3 to get 18, and lastly, the 1 statement fell under somewhat untrue and was multiplied by 2 to get 2. The sum of all the scores is what totaled 78.

The top-rated statements from the assessment include members of organizations living by a shared vision and mission based on trust, respect, and collegiality, and there is evidence and promotion of collaboration and teamwork in the organization, the availability of resources to promote personnel growth, and development among others. These qualities are very central to a healthy work environment as they are classified as personal motivation elements, yet they were only 6, thus resulting in a mildly healthy work environment (Clark, 2019). There were also a number of the least rated elements from the assessment, including communication at all levels of the organization is transparent, direct, and respectful, which fell under somewhat untrue, and the organization provides competitive salaries, benefits, compensations, and other rewards, which fell under neutral. These elements are important, and given that they are least rated, this is why this organization has a mildly healthy work environment and poor civility. Initially, it was noted that it is every organization’s objective to achieve a healthy work environment that will boost its employees’ productivity (Alves et al., 2017). Therefore, there is still a need for the organization to implement strategies that will help solve the issues of the least rating and boost the top-rated elements and result in an organization with a very healthy workplace with adequate civility.

One of the things that surprised me about the results is the fact that the statement that ‘the individual and collective achievements are celebrated and publicized in an equitable manner’ was rated as somewhat true. This attribute surprised me because I expected it to fall under neutral, just as salaries, benefits, and rewards. I strongly believe that other than publicizing its employee’s achievements, the organization can celebrate them in a better way by offering them attractive incentives and perhaps giving them salary increments, which will, in turn, motivate them to even increase their performance. The other thing that surprised me is that since communication is key in every aspect, I expected it to be top-rated, yet it was the only statement that was least rated, falling under somewhat untrue. In addition to this, one idea that I believed prior to conducting the assessment that was confirmed is employees living by the mission based on trust, respect, and collegiality.

Part 2

The article “Fostering Civility in Nursing Education and Practice” by Clark et al. (2011) is a very instrumental and enlightening source of information for the nursing fraternity in relation to the health of a work environment. The main concept presented in this article is incivility in healthcare, strategies to cultivate civility as well as the crucial expertise to be included in nursing education (Clark et al., 2011). Incivility refers to the act of being uncourteous. It is still common in healthcare workplaces resulting in poor medical service delivery (Alves et al., 2017). Given its common nature, it becomes a concern that must be dealt with to create a conducive work environment for nursing professionals to enhance patient outcomes. An example of incivility in the organization is that leaders are not playing their role of ensuring that communication at all levels of the organization is transparent, direct, and respectful (Clark, 2019). My organization can apply the knowledge on the crucial expertise to be included in nursing education to improve organizational health and create stronger work teams.

It is well-known that communication plays a huge role in ensuring that information at the workplace is delivered accordingly. Using the theory of the integral expertise required to get students ready to implement civility in their practice, my organization can apply this concept by borrowing the skills and instilling them in their staff to help them prepare for implementing successful practices that will ensure a conducive and healthy work environment. For instance, my company can instill the skill of cooperation, teamwork, and effective communication among its staff to help eliminate the lack of respectful, transparent, and direct communication from the leaders. It can do this by holding seminars and workshops where leaders will be taught the importance of effective communication and the effects of poor communication on the work environment (Nantsupawat et al., 2017). The training will help in cultivating the skill of effective communication, thus enabling them to practice direct, respectful, and transparent communication that enhances a healthy work environment. Part 3

The following are the examples of the shortcomings revealed in my work environment assessment: unreasonable workload, which is unequally distributed, and the organization perceiving its employees as liabilities and does not give them the value they deserve. It is obvious that whenever there is an unrealistic workload that is unfairly distributed, the employees will lack the morale to perform their roles and responsibilities. Similarly, whenever there is an employee does not feel appreciated by their employers, they seem to lack motivation resulting in delivering average rather than excellent work (Nantsupawat et al., 2017). One of the strategies I can recommend being established to address the first shortcoming is implementing a healthy work environment that stresses civility in a healthcare setting (Clark et al., 2011). This strategy will ensure that the organization focuses on practices that create a conducive work environment, such as the equal distribution of work and realizing workload, thus solving this shortcoming.

The other strategy I will recommend to be established to help address the second shortcoming is implementing a code of conduct that stipulates how people should behave. This will ensure that the organization behaves accordingly by valuing its employees and perceiving them as assets and partners, thus, boosting their morale. Lastly, the two strategies I can recommend to bolster successful practices include holding joint meetings to establish a shared vision and culture of healthcare civility and offering problem-solving and conflict resolution training. Every organization has a mission and vision that drives its employees to orient their goals towards achieving the organizational culture. Therefore, the first strategy will help boost the successful practice of the organization in ensuring that its healthcare staff lives by their shared mission and vision in relation to collegiality, respect, and trust. The other strategy will help boost the successful practice of my company in ensuring that its staff utilizes efficient expertise in resolving conflicts solve misunderstandings responsibly (Clark et al., 2011). Therefore, my organization should implement these strategies to help boost its excellent practices and achieve a very healthy work environment for its healthcare staff.
